2016 Update—November 7th to 19th

On Monday the 8th I door knocked with Senator Sokola in the afternoon, and that evening I attended the monthly meeting of the 23rd RD Democratic Committee.  I spent election day in the district, visiting First Presbyterian Church, George Wilson Center, the Church of the Nazarene, UU Society of Mill Creek, Maclary Elementary School, and Aetna Fire Hall, along with spending most of the time at Downes Elementary.  On Wednesday the 9th I joined Representative David Bentz at a meeting with a representative of Christiana Care who focuses on community services.  On Thursday evening I attended a meeting with residents of Christine Manor who are concerned with a recently approved development plan.  On Friday morning I joined Vice President Joe Biden at the annual Veterans Day Remembrance event at the Memorial Park near the Delaware Memorial Bridge.  That afternoon I taped two segments on the Comcast Newsmakers program (available to watch under Video on the website), and attended the 20th anniversary celebration at Newark’s Iron Hill Brewery and Restaurant.

On Sunday the 13th I attended a Diwali celebration which raised funds for the families of the recently fallen firefighters.  On Tuesday I attended a homelessness meeting at Buena Vista, then drove to Dover to meet with the President of Wesley College, and afterwards attended a meeting on the Transperfect case.  After that meeting I met with and addressed the group which came to Legislative Hall to protest the Dakota Access Pipeline  That evening I participated in a March for Equality and Justice in Newark, and afterwards attended an interest meeting on a proposed homeless service center in Newark (HELPing Hand is the new organization).  On Wednesday I joined Representative John Kowalko at Newark High School as part of American Education Week (and Education Support Professional Day), to honor Helen Morehead and all the state’s paraprofessionals who help our public school students every day.  On Thursday I attended the Human Trafficking Conference in Dover.  That evening I attended a Common Cause event honoring the service of retired State Senator Karen Peterson, then participated in a PTK, Parents of Trans Kids, support group at Nemours Hospital, and ended the evening at the town hall on Cannabis Regulation.  On Friday I had a meeting on student need-based funding, and that afternoon participated in a (final?) meeting of the stakeholder group exploring the issue of direct shipment of wine in Delaware.  On Saturday afternoon I drove through the district to finalize the community streets which will be repaved in 2017, and that evening I attended the 20th annual banquet and awards ceremony of the Newark Chapter of the NAACP.

Email

I had emails on legislative initiatives (regulating cannabis, medical aid in dying, national popular vote, and no excuse absentee voting).

There were emails on DelDOT issues (drainage on Virginia Place, and to establish a meeting to discuss the Cleveland Avenue traffic proposals).

There were emails with the city of Newark (a resident raised a question about his water bill and requesting that a dead deer be picked up).

There were emails with the University of Delaware (regarding their assistance with Radio Newark, regarding a hate crime, and on a Freedom of Information Act issue)
